When I was a little girl I loved visiting my grandmother, or ‘Nana’ as I called her and dressing up in her clothes. She had a pair of beautiful gold slippers & every time I tried them on, I felt like a princess! I would raid her jewellery box & put on an armful of chunky, costume bracelets & layers of pearls to complete the look. Then I’d stand in front of the mirror admiring myself imagining I was going to a ball like Cinderella!
Nana loved fashion and as a young woman in the 1930s, she was always impeccably dressed when she went out to social events. Luckily I have lots of old photos of her wearing stylish outfits. As a fashion blogger, I’m always inspired by vintage fashion particularly from the 20s and 30s. Hopefully I’ve inherited some of my grandmother’s good taste and chic style.
Silk Kimono
In this photo from the early 1930s, Nana is wearing a silk kimono coat made popular by Paul Poiret’s oriental designs during the 1920s.
Kimonos made a comeback in summer 2018. For a dressed down, boho look, it’s worn with white t-shirt and jeans.
Halterneck Swimsuit
During the 1930s, halterneck dresses & swimsuits became a huge trend. Nana is seen here wearing a halterneck one-piece with asymmetrical print. Swimwear for women was becoming more bodycon, comfortable and glamorous!
Two-Piece Suit
In the 1930s, women wore long, figure hugging, bias cut dresses for evening wear. For glamorous day wear, the two-piece suit was very popular. In this photo Nana is wearing a belted, short sleeved jacket with embroidered collar and sleeves with a skirt. She wore hold up stockings and one strap Mary Jane shoes which were very popular at the time.
Here’s an Enna Jetticks shoe ad from the 1930s featuring popular shoe styles:
This article is dedicated to my stylish grandmother, Betty June Warren who died when I was just 8 years old. I’ll always remember her beauty, good taste and love of fashion. She is and always will be my style icon.
