Dutch avant-garde artist, Piet Mondrian’s creations have had a huge impact on pop culture over the last 100 years. Mondrian’s iconic paintings, which he called “compositions”, are undoubtedly the best known representatives of Neo-Plasticism.
Mondrian was a founding member of the Dutch art movement, De Stijl. The supporters of this movement used only the primary colours and the three primary values black, white and grey in squares and rectangles, divided by straight horizontal or vertical lines. Influenced by Cubism, the results were effectively progressive, radically abstract and deliberately unconventional.
The Mondrian Dress
Perhaps as famous as the painter’s canvases is the Mondrian Dress by Yves Saint Laurent. Originally part of a 1965 collection, in which YSL paid homage to several different artists, the Mondrian dress grabbed so much attention that the collection has been dubbed the “Mondrian Collection”.
The conceptual design of the garment reflects the movement: unadorned, abstract and simple. The results look like a wearable canvas. For her AW11 collection, Miuccia Prada, who is a big fan of the Mondrian Dress, also paid tribute to the concept and incorporated the design into her own line.

Following completion of my online history of art course in June, I’ve taken up painting as a new hobby. My first creation is an ode to Piet Mondrian, a variation on his “Composition with Red, Blue, Yellow ”.
